Keep campaign naming consistent.
- Use one consistent lowercase value for each source and medium.
- Keep the campaign name stable across every link in the same promotion.
- Use utm_term for paid keywords or audience values when your channel needs it.
- Use utm_content to distinguish creatives, calls to action, or placements.
- Avoid spaces and inconsistent spelling that split one campaign into multiple reports.
- Do not add UTM tags to internal links unless you intentionally want to restart attribution.
- Review the final URL and test the destination before publishing it.
Frequently asked questions
Which fields are required?
Enter the destination URL, campaign source, campaign medium, and campaign name. Campaign term and campaign content are optional.
What does utm_source mean?
It identifies where the traffic comes from, such as google, newsletter, linkedin, or a partner site.
What does utm_medium mean?
It identifies the marketing channel, such as email, cpc, paid_social, social, or referral.
When should I use campaign term?
Use utm_term for a paid search keyword or another keyword-level value your campaign reporting needs.
When should I use campaign content?
Use utm_content to distinguish links or creatives that point to the same destination, such as hero-button and footer-link.
Does this tool store my URLs?
No. The URL is assembled in your browser and is not saved by this tool.
Will the builder change my destination URL?
No. It keeps the destination page, preserves existing query parameters, and only adds or replaces UTM values.
What is a UTM URL used for?
A UTM URL helps analytics platforms identify which source, channel, campaign, keyword, or creative sent someone to your page.
Do I need utm_term for social or email links?
Usually no. Leave it blank unless you need to track a paid keyword or a specific audience value.
Can I add UTM parameters to a URL that already has query parameters?
Yes. The builder keeps the existing query parameters and adds the UTM values to the same URL.
Should I use UTM tags on internal links?
Usually no. Internal UTM tags can overwrite the original campaign attribution. Use them only when you intentionally want to start a new tracking context.
